Black Estate

Located in the heart of North Canterbury’s Waipara Valley, Black Estate is a family-owned winery dedicated to organic and biodynamic farming across three distinct hillside vineyards. Our commitment to the land is reflected in a "less is more" winemaking philosophy, allowing the rich clay and limestone soils to speak clearly through every bottle. Framed by sweeping views of the Southern Alps and the rolling valley floor, the estate provides a striking landscape that is as honest and expressive as the wines themselves. We are best known for our elegant, site-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which capture the vibrant energy of the North Canterbury region.

Black Estate Chenin Blanc

Black Estate Young Vine Chardonnay

Taste Profile: A vibrant, mineral-driven Chardonnay crafted for immediate enjoyment. Crisp and dry, it features a lively core of citrus zest and stone fruit balanced by a signature saline edge. Despite the vines' youth, barrel fermentation and lees aging provide an impressive texture with hints of toasted nuts and a long, creamy finish. Food Pairing: The high acidity and salinity perfectly cut through rich, buttery sauces. Ideal with herb-roasted chicken, scallops, crab, or a creamy mushroom risotto. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese and roasted cauliflower.

Black Estate Home Pinot Noir

Taste Profile: A deep ruby Pinot Noir offering a complex bouquet of blackcurrant, thyme, violet, and warm cinnamon. The palate is dense and well-structured, featuring ripe notes of raspberry, cherry, and plum supported by fine, firm tannins and a fresh acidity. The finish is long and distinctly mineral-driven -an elegant, artisanal expression of North Canterbury. Food Pairing: Its structure and spice make it an excellent companion for wild mushrooms, game birds, or herb-crusted lamb. It also pairs beautifully with duck or lighter red meat dishes, where the wine’s vibrant acidity and minerality can truly shine.

Black Estate Pet Nat

Taste Profile: A naturally sparkling wine that captures the pure, aromatic essence of the Home Vineyard. Unfiltered and bottled during fermentation, this Pet Nat is hazy and alive, bursting with notes of elderflower, fresh table grapes, and citrus blossom. The palate is dry and incredibly refreshing, featuring a light, playful fizz and a zesty acidity that makes it dangerously "quaffable." Food Pairing: The ultimate aperitif or "celebration of the sun" wine. It pairs beautifully with light, fresh flavors like sashimi, oysters with a lime mignonette, or spicy Vietnamese summer rolls. Its aromatic lift also makes it a surprising and delightful match for fresh fruit tarts or creamy buffalo mozzarella.
